ESSEL LOSS DISPATCHES FOR APRIL 2009
Offshore production vessel Maersk Ngujima-Yin (ex-Ellen Maersk) suffered fire off west Australia on Apr. 13 at 1300LT. Oil production was immediately stopped. The crew controlled the blaze within 2 hours. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Wed. Apr. 15 2009).
F/V Dictator was in collision with 965-ft M/V Florida 47 miles off the coast of Cape May, New Jersey, on Apr. 14. No injuries reported, but F/V Dictator suffered damaged rudder. The Coast Guard diverted a C-130 aircrew and launched the Cutters Finback and Dependable from Cape May to the scene. F/V Dictator will require tow. N33,337-gt American cargo M/V Liberty Sun (IMO 8500551, built 1986) was attacked by pirates armed with grenade launchers and automatic weapons in the Gulf of Aden on Apr. 14. The pirates failed to take over the vessel, which was able to continue with its delivery of humanitarian food aid to the Kenyan port of Mombasa. No injuries but vessel damage reported. U.S.S. Bainbridge responded to the distress call, but by the time it arrived to the scene the pirates had fled. The U.S.S. Bainbridge is escorting the Liberty Sun to Mombasa. N35,000-ton St. Vincent-Grenadines-flagged (Greek-owned) bulk carrier M/V Irene EM (IMO 7433593), India to Jordan with 22 crew, was captured in the Gulf of Aden by Somalian pirates on Apr. 14. N5,000-tonne Togo-flagged M/V Sea Horse was taken by Somali pirates which attacked from 3-4 skiffs 140-km off the Somalia coast on Apr. 14. (Tues. Apr. 14 2009).
N21,887-tonne Liberian-flagged cargo M/V Safmarine Asia was attacked by pirates off the Horn of Africa on Apr. 14. 10 pirates aboard 3 skiffs fired automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades at the vessel. (Tues. Apr. 14 2009).
NSomalian pirates seized two Egyption fishing boats in the Gulf of Aden off Somalia's northern coast on Apr. 13. Egypt's Foreign Ministry reported 18-24 people aboard. (Tues. Apr. 14 2009).
191-m, 20,871-gt Swedish cargo M/V Vikingland (IMO 7718541) suffered kitchen fire in the port of Kotka, Finland, on Apr. 12. The crew was evacuated and fire extinguished without report of injury. Gibraltar-flagged container M/V Maersk Vancouver (IMO 9242625) suffered machine failure and ran aground at the Strom Quay in Bremerhaven on Apr. 10. The tug was still attached to the vessel after it left port but the tug and both anchors failed to keep the vessel in position. The vessel was refloated with the assistance of a second tug. Malaysian tug Astaka, Can Tho port for Singapore towing sand barge and with 11 crew, ran aground and caught fire off the southern coast of Tra Vinh province on April 8. 4 crew rescued, 7 crew remain missing. Mainland sand carrier Lun Fok 108 collided with Hong Kong-registered F/V Zhu Heng 1746 near the Friendship Bridge at Hong Kong on Apr. 8 at 1300LT. No injuries reported. The collision caused a minor damage to the sand carrier ship's rear and drain pipe, while the front part of the F/V was reported with more severe damage. 261-m, 40,300-gt container vessel YM Taichung (IMO 9280811) lost 14 containers overboard and suffered 26 damaged containers in reportedly heavy weather 1,000-nm west of San Francisco on Apr. 5. 4.9-ton F/V Daisan Uozumi Maru, with 3 people, collided with a pleasure boat in Wakasa Bay in Maizuru, Kyoto Prefecture, on Apr. 7. The pleasure boat capsized. At least one person reported missing. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Wed. Apr. 8 2009).
N17,000-ton U.S.-flagged Maersk Alabama, sailing from Salalah in Oman to the Kenyan port of Mombassa via Djibouti and delivering humanitarian aid to Africa, was seized by Pirates 240-nm southeast of the Somali port city Eyl on Apr. 8 at 0730LT. The incident is the first pirate attack on a U.S.-flagged vessel in over 200 years. The vessel's crew of 20 managed to overpower the pirates and regain control, but the ship's captain is being held hostage on a lifeboat. A spokesman for World Food Program confirmed that part of the ship's cargo was being ferried on its behalf, including 4,000 metric tons of corn headed for Somalia and Uganda, and 1,000 metric tons of vegetable oil earmarked for refugees in Kenya. It was expected to dock in the Kenyan port of Mombasa on April 16. At the time of the attack, the closet U.S. warship was 300 miles away and unable to respond. Former HM navy vessel (minesweeper) Kellington flooded and listed at its berth on the Stockton riverside, UK, on Apr. 6. The vessel's condition is attributed to years of vandal attacks. The historical vessel was brought to the Stockton riverside in 1993 with talk of restoration. The vessel, now resting on the bototm, may be dismantled where it lies. Sydney ferry Lady Northcott, with 200 passengers, went aground on rocks when it overshot the wharf at Taronga Zoo on Apr 6. The vessel was towed off the rocks without report of injury. 105-m tanker Granba (IMO 8030269, built 1983, ex-Metilo, Camaron, Sichem Camaron) with cargo of Sulphuric Acid, suffered leakage of acid from cargo to ballast tanks and required assistance approaching Sri Lanka Coast off Trincomalee (position 08 24.3° N and 81 29.3° E) on Apr. 6. The crew abandoned ship. In recognition of environmental risks to the Sri Lankan waters and coastline, the Sri Lanka Navy towed the listing tanker to deep sea pending salvage investigation. Nassau-flagged tug Englishman suffered fire 80 km NW of Den Helder in the Northsea on Apr. 4 at 2330LT. The fire was controlled by 0100LT on Apr. 5. 31,122-gt Irish Ferries vessel Oscar Wilde (IMO 8506311) allided with a dock ramp while docking in Cherbourg, France, on Apr. 5. An unidentified overloaded boat with 47 people aboard capsized in the Amazon river, jungle state of Amazonas, on Apr. 5. At least 6 people reported missing. 273-ft, 3,910-gt Panama-flagged roro/lolo M/V Sloman Rover (IMO 7812919) collided with 2 tugs when leaving the port of Curacao in the Anna Bay on Apr. 2 at 0430LT. N20,526-dwt, 1,550-TEU German container M/V Hansa Stavanger (IMO 9128465) was captured by pirates in the Indian Ocean 400-nm off the southern Somali port of Kismayo, between the Seychelles and Kenya, on Apr. 4. 9,956-gt Norwegian tanker M/V Doris (IMO 9172210), with cargo of 14,000 tons diesel fuel from St. Petersburg, suffered rudder failure and ran aground in the approach of Lorient, France, on Apr. 3 at 0550LT. Russian trawler MRTK-1093 (IMO 8227991) grounded on rocks at position 52.50.5N 158.38.3E close to Bezymyanniy Point, in 52.50.5N 158.38.3E, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, on Apr. 1 at 2000LT. The vessel was holed and engine room flooding. At 2155LT the crew of 8 abandoned ship by life raft. The trawler MRTK-316 took them aboard with no injuries reported. 4,969-dwt Russian tanker Ust-Kan (IMO 7923691, built 1981) suffered fire while proceeding in ballast at position 51.00.5N 155.26.1E in the Okhotsk sea, 46 miles off Lopatka Point, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russian, on Mar. 31 at 1115LT. No injuries reported, but the water used to fight the fire resulted in a 15-degree port list. The fire was controlled by 0050LT. 360-ft Swiss-flagged inland passenger M/V Amadante, with 135 passengers aboard, allided with bridge at Segnitz (Kitzingen Community) on Apr. 1. The wheelhouse suffered damage and the captain was reported slightly injured. The vessel was moored in the old harbour in Würzburg where repairs are to be carried out. 120-ft ferry Super Mexico, which had been docked near Cabrillo Boat Shop in the Port of Long Beach for 2 years, sank in the morning of Mar. 31. The cause of the incident remains unknown and is under investigation. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Wed. Apr. 1 2009).
Trawler Fifth Season, home port Baltimore, Maryland, collided with jetties and took on water outside Charleston, South Carolina, on Mar. 30 at 2030LT. The Coast Guard, Tow Boat U.S., and the South Carolina Dept. of Natural Resources responded to the incident. The single crewman was not injured. Possible pollution reported. 15,315-dwt Marshall-Islands flagged cargo M/V Lantau Ace (IMO 9216353), Hamburg to Gdynia, ran into the embankment of the Kiel Canal in heavy fog near Brunsbuettel, Germany, on Apr. 1 at 0700LT. 32,136-gt American-flagged tanker S/R Baytown (IMO 8109682, ex-Exxon Baytown), belonging to SeaRiver Maritime, Inc. - a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil Corp. - was prohibited by the Coast Guard from loading oil in Valdez after cracks were were found in the 24-year-old vessel. The tanker crew discovered a 5-inch crack in the main deck and notified the Coast Guard. A 4-inch crack also was found in a rim on the vessel that is designed to contain spills. On Coast Guard orders, the ship owner made temporary repairs and then sailed the vessel out on Mar 28 — without the oil shipment — for permanent repairs. M/V Matthew Flinders, with cargo got cattle, drifted from anchor and ran aground on King Island in Bass Strait, Tasmania, on Mar. 31. No injury to crew or pollution reported. A barge of tug Nathan Brothers broke away under tow, allided with the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and ran aground on Fisherman's Island in Chesapeake Bay on Mar. 30. NSomali pirates fired at German naval supply ship Spessart in the Gulf of Aden on Mar. 30. The incident gave rise to a 5-hour chase by German, Greek, Dutch, Spanish and U.S. warships before the 7 pirates were caught and arrested. The pirates may have mistaken the Spessart for a merchant ship. Involved in the chase were the U.S. amphibious assault ship Boxer and two U.S. Marine Cobra helicopters. German commandos boarded the pirate vessel. The seven pirates have been turned over to the German frigate Rheinland Pfalz for possible prosecution. From our Sr. Correspondent Tim Schwabedissen (Wed. Russian research vessel Basalt, which belongs to the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, sank off the shore of Avacha Bay on Mar. 31 at 0800LT. 65-m, 805-gt Danish chemical tanker M/V Maria Soltin (IMO 7203699) ran aground north of Måløy on Mar. 28 at 0400LT. The vessel suffered breached ballast tanks and developed a list of 20-25 degrees to port and had to be evacuated by the rescue boat Simrad Buholmen.
